Wiliwilinui Ridge

WILIWILINUI RIDGE

A moderate hike with rewarding views of the ocean, mountain and city

Near the top of the ridge

My friend Aryam was the one who first introduced me to this beautiful hike 4 years ago and I have returned several times after that. I don’t think I will ever get tired of hiking this ridge- every time I see something different and it feels like a new adventure!

It’s very easy to get to the hike- from Kalanianaole Hwy you take Laukahi road all the way to the top. There is a guard who will give you a parking permit (parking is limited since it is in the gated community of Waialae Iki). The hike starts as an easy walk, and it becomes more challenging towards the end. It’s almost 5 miles long, so it takes me around 3.30 hours to complete (if you run it or walk fast, of course it will take you less:) Along the hike you will see some pick-a-boo views of the city. Also, keep in mind it might be a little muddy (especially if it’s during the winter). Overall, It’s green and beautiful, you can see some occasional flowers, and encounter butterflies.

And the stairs begin!

About midpoint is where the stairs begin and the incline towards the top of the ridge. The stairs are easy (I’m thankful for all the nature lovers who made our life easier by placing “stairs”). Towards the top, there are some ropes and “challenging” incline- it’s a good workout if I haven’t exercised in a while lol.. at the end it’s all worth it- if the sky is clear, there is a rewarding view of Kailua side of the island. And time for snacks before heading back :)
